Episode 1 - They Call It Love
|
31st December 2006 11.34pm It's New Years Eve. Dave is wandering a hotel corridor as he waits for Kerry to appear. ![]()
Rik: Hey Dave. What's
up? |
1st March 2007
New York, America

Kerry Harris has been on the
run from the police since 31st December 2006. She is now
living a life of secrets in New York in America. She has a
new job as a hairdresser, has new friends and a brand new
image. Gone is the long red hair - in its place is short,
black hair.

Kerry: I want to
fly. Fly away and leave my problems behind. Just fly away
into the sky and never come back. Oh to be a bird. To be
able to spread my wings and fly.

Kerry: Argh!

11.45am
Jackie: Kerry, wake up.
Kerry: Fly, I want to fly.
Jackie: Kerry!

Kerry: Mhm, what is
it?
Jackie: It's time to get off the train - we've
reached Manhattan.
Kerry: Oh. I was sleeping.
Jackie: And dreaming, by the sounds of it. Was it
that suicide dream again?
Kerry: The one where I want to fly but end up jumping
off a building? Yes.
Jackie: It sounds like it's becoming a bit of a
problem - maybe you should speak to someone about it.
Kerry: Yeah, maybe.
Jackie: Anyway, lets get off the train.

Ben: Hello mother -
and Kerry.
Jackie: What are doing here, Ben?
Ben: Well when ones mother doesn't appear home in the
evening, one starts to get worried.
Jackie: I called you - didn't you get my message?
Ben: At 8am this morning, yes.
Jackie: I called you last night at 8pm and left a
message.
Ben: I was out, with Lou.
Jackie: Oh yes, her. Hasn't she left you yet?
Kerry: Listen guys, I'd better head off. I'll see you
both later.

11.53am
The Red Rock Cafe is a popular cafe in downtown
Manhattan.

Lou Parker, a resident
from Sim Street in Riverside is on holiday in New York for 2
weeks. She does not know that she is currently chatting to
Kerry Harris, a former resident of Sim Street who is now on
the run from the police.
Lou: I can't believe I'm heading home at the weekend.
Kerry: Have you been here long?
Lou: Almost two weeks now. I've had a fantastic time
and I've spent loads of money.
Kerry: We all seem to do on holiday. Have you bought
anything nice?
Lou: Just the usual stuff - clothes, chocolate,
shoes.
Kerry: Nice.
Lou: I also bumped into somebody nice. He lives just
up the road from here. Ben Walls is his name is.
Kerry: I know his mother, Jackie. Are you and Ben
friends?
Lou: Sort of. We've only known each other a week or
so but things have been going pretty well. I'll miss him
when I go home.

Kerry: That always
sucks about going holidays - the going home part.
Lou: Yeah. By the way, are you on holiday? You don't
have an American accent so I'm assuming you're not a
permanent resident here.
Kerry: I moved her, two years ago.
Lou: It's a British accent that you have though.
Kerry: Yeah.
Lou: I recognise it. In fact I recognise you. We
haven't met before have we?
Kerry: No, I don't think so.
Lou: Mhm, I'm not sure.
Kerry: Listen, I'd better head off, I'm meeting...
somebody. Where did you say you were from?
Lou: I didn't tell you.
Kerry: Tell me anyway.
Lou: Rivderside - it's in the UK. Ever heard of it?
Kerry: Maybe. Anyway, I have to go. See you later.

12.32pm
Ben and Jackie are in Jackie's New York apartment.
Ben: So mother, what were you doing last night?
Jackie: Kerry and I were out - we went to the theatre
and saw this fantastic play. It was...
Ben: I don't care about the play, where did you go
after that?
Jackie: We decided to check into a hotel. I called
you at 8pm to tell you.
Ben: Yes, well.
Jackie: I'm fed up of you sometimes - I spend one
night away and you act like this.
Ben: You're fed up of me? I'm the one who should be
fed up. You constantly criticise me and the things that
surround me - like my job. You disappear sometimes and go
off wandering on your own. I can't control you sometimes.
Jackie: Then stop trying to.

Ben: Mum, you need
to slow down - maybe you should start behaving like a adult.
Jackie: Don't talk to me about behaving like an
adult.
Ben: It's true - you're like a teenager sometimes.
Not a thought of consideration for anyone else.
Jackie: And this comes from you!
Ben: I've grown up mother.
Jackie: That doesn't make up for what you did.
Ben: But I've moved on.
Jackie: I haven't! You still need to be punished.
Ben: This is my punishment?
Jackie: What?
Ben: Disappearing, going off on your own, being all
secretive, criticising me.
Jackie: That's no punishment - that's just the way I
am. Your punishment however, is ongoing. You just haven't
noticed it yet.
Ben: What are you talking about now? You're beginning
to make no sense.
Jackie: I have to go now Ben. To meet Kerry. I'll see
you later.

1.12pm
Lou: Susan, do you mind if I use the phone?
Susan: Yeah, sure, go ahead.
Lou: Thanks.

Sim Street, Riverside
Seth: It's too big.
Phyllis: The pub will look smaller when we get the
furniture in.
Rik: It's too modern as well. The old pub looked much
better.
Phyllis: Oh will you two stop moaning. It's not my
fault the pub was set on fire last year. It needed
refurbished and that's what has happened.
Rik: I'm not keen on the colour of wood - it's too
dark.
Phyllis: I've already told you, stop moaning.
Rik: I don't even know why you took control of this
place. It used to belong to my sister - I should be in
charge.
Phyllis: This place has been closed since December.
It only started getting refurbished a few weeks ago - and
that was because of me. You, Rik, were too busy caught up in
work, baby stuff and wedding plans to even think about the
pub. Somebody had to step in and sort this mess out so I
did. And I happen to quite like the pubs new look. It's
clean, modern and feels fresh.

Rik: I was planning on...
Phyllis: Not another word from you, Rik. Not unless
you have something constructive to say.
Rik: Oi - that's...
Phyllis: Haven't you got work to be doing?
(Phone rings)
Rik: I suppose you'll get that will you?
Phyllis: Yes.

Lou: Hello,
Phyllis?

Phyllis: Hello.
Lou: Phyllis, it's Lou.
Phyllis: Lou, how are you? How's the holiday?
Lou: Forget the holiday - guess who I bumped into
this morning? Kerry!
Phyllis: You didn't! No way! What did you do?
Lou: Nothing, she was just leaving when I realised
who she was. What do we do?
Phyllis: You call the police in New York. I'll call
the police here in Riverside and let them know.

1.57pm
Paula: I know it's terrible news that you've lost
your job but you can't just give up.
Henry: I'm looking for a new job.
Paula: Really?
Henry: Yes.
Paula: I don't believe you. You've been out of work
for nearly a month and you haven't even applied for a single
new job yet.
Henry: I haven't seen a job I like yet.
Paula: Well search harder then. We only have some
money in the bank left - we can't live off of it much longer.
Henry: (Sighs) Okay, sorry. I'll stop being so picky and
choose a job that suits me as soon as I can.
Paula: I'm sorry for being so moany, Henry. It's just
that we're in a bit of a sticky situation here. We're still
considering moving back to Pleasantview, Steven's applying
to university for September and we have a family of four to
look after.

Henry: Honey, I know. And I promise you that I'll try
and do something about it.
Paula: Thanks.
Henry: I'm glad we got that sorted.
Paula: Me too. Actually, you know, I could get a job
too. I could easily work as a secretary or supermarket
assistant.
Henry: You? Work? Don't make me laugh... (laughs)
Paula: Henry!

Henry: Paula... I was joking.
Paula: Shut up Henry, I don't want to here it.

3.12pm
Ben: I thought you were meeting someone?
Jackie: I was supposed to be. Kerry didn't turn up.
Ben: Oh, alright. By the way, I want to apologise for
this morning. We really need to stop arguing.
Jackie: Yes, we do seem to do that a lot.
Ben: So how about you and I go out for dinner
tonight. My treat.
Jackie: I can't, I'm busy. Kerry and I are supposed
to be going to the cinema.
Ben: Fine, how about tomorrow?
Jackie: That should be okay.

Ben: There was something else I wanted to talk about
as well.
Jackie: What is it?
Ben: It's about what happened in the past.
Jackie: Oh, that.
Ben: I know I did something wrong.
Jackie: Extremely wrong.
Ben: Yes, something extremely wrong... but can't we
leave the past in the past. Every time we argue you hold
that against me.
Jackie: But if we stop arguing, like we just agreed,
then I shouldn't need to threaten you with the past.
Ben: I suppose.
Jackie: Oh, I must dash - I just saw Kerry across the
street. See you later.

Jackie: Kerry - I thought I saw you coming in here.
What's up?
Kerry: I'm leaving New York.
Jackie: What? But you can't!
Kerry: I have to. I really can't afford to stay here
anymore.
Jackie: Why not?
Kerry: It's personal. I'd rather not say.
Jackie: But we've been having so much fun lately
Kerry: I know and I wish I could stay her forever but
I need to leave.
Jackie: Will you be back?
Kerry: I doubt it.

Jackie: Oh, oh well. When are you leaving?
Kerry: Soon. I've packed my suitcase - it's in my
room. I'm just heading out for some food now. I'll be taking
the next train out of New York.
Jackie: Oh Kerry. I'm sensing something's wrong.
Whatever it is, you can tell me.
Kerry: Do you know Lou Parker?
Jackie: Yes, she's a friend of Ben's I think.
Kerry: She knows exactly why I'm leaving - talk to
her and she'll tell you.
(Phone rings)
Kerry: That's my phone. Anyway you've got my phone
number - we can speak again.
Jackie: So this is goodbye then?
Kerry: Yeah. Goodbye Jackie.
Jackie: Goodbye Kerry. Take care,
Kerry: You too.

1st January 2007, 3.21am Paris, France Three hours ago Kerry Harris escaped from the police. Her fiancé, however, was shot dead and did not escape. The police, with the help of Phyllis, have managed to contact Kerry via mobile phone. Kerry: What have you done with Dave? I suppose you've arrested him? Phyllis: No, we haven't been able to speak with Dave. Kerry: You mean he's escaped too? Phyllis: Kerry, we've got nearly a hundred police officers looking for you all over Paris. I think it's time you gave yourself up. Just come back to the Hotel Madison... Kerry: Why I want to do that? I'll just be arrested and I'll end up spending the rest of my life in prison. Phyllis: Kerry, didn't you once say that nothing in this world is as important as Dave and your baby? Kerry: Yes, I said that. Phyllis: Then come back. ![]()
Kerry: No, I can't. |
1st March 2007, 4pm
Phyllis: Kerry, you can't keep running.
Kerry: Mother - how did you get my phone number?
Phyllis: I believe you know Jackie - somebody who
just happens to know Lou who just happened to pass on your
phone number along with every other detail about you
including what you look like and where you've been living
for the past 2 months. The police are on their way to you
right now.
Kerry: I'm going away again. Another image change,
another new life.
Phyllis: Aren't you getting bored yet? If you give
yourself up you'll be saving yourself a lot of hassle - and
money.
Kerry: I don't want to go to jail. I'm not spending
the rest of my life in a cell that's only 3 metres wide, 3
metres long and 3 metres high. I'd go crazy.
Phyllis: Aren't you already?
Kerry: I'm leaving again. I'll soon have another new
life.
Phyllis: Don't you want to know about your baby
Kimberly? She's learning to speak. And her hair is just like
yours.
(Silence).
Phyllis: Kerry? Are you there?
Kerry: Goodbye mum.

Rik: Was that Kerry?
Phyllis: Yes.
Rik: Have they found her?
Phyllis: She's in Manhattan in New York. That's all
they know at the moment.
Rik: In a way, I feel kind of bad for her.
Phyllis: Don't. She deserves no sympathy at all.
Rik: But she was so happy this time last year. And
then Kate came along and messed everything up. And then Dave
died.

31st December 2006 12.22am Lexi: Dave, Happy New Year Dave: Oh, it's you. You haven't seen Kerry have you? ![]()
Dave:
Oh! What are you doing with that? |
7.34pm
Ben and Lou are just back from the police station.
Ben: You've certainly had an action packed two weeks
in New York.
Lou: Yeah. First I meet you and then I meet Kerry.
Ben: I always thought there was something dodgy about
her.
Lou: I just hope the police catch her soon. She
deserves to spend the rest of her life in prison for what
she did.
Ben: We've all done things in the past that we wish
we hadn't.
Lou: She killed two people. Well, one person. She
killed one person - twice. It's complicated.
Ben: (Laughs) It sounds complicated.

Lou: I'm going to miss you when I go back to the UK.
Ben: I'll miss you too. We can stay in contact
through e-mail, phone etc.
Lou: It's not as good as real life.
Ben: I could come and visit sometimes. If you'd like
that.
Lou: I would.

Kerry has had another image change. She is currently on the
phone to a police officer.
DC Gavin: Kerry, you can't keep running.
Kerry: Yes, I can. I've been able to do it for two
months and I'm coping just fine.
DC Gavin: The police know where you're at, Kerry.
They'll find you soon.
Kerry: I was told that several hours ago and they
haven't turned up. Either police officers are very slow or
some people are just trying to scare me. I'm now going to
hang up on you. Goo..
DC Gavin: Kerry, wait. Before you hang up.
Kerry: What is it?
DC Gavin: It's Kate.
Kerry: Oh.
DC Gavin: We know she was at the Hotel Madison on New
Years Eve. We haven't seen her since.
Kerry: Oh. Didn't you find her?
DC Gavin: What happened?
Kerry: She attacked me so I locked her in the
basement. I left the keys outside so somebody could unlock
the door the next time they were down there.
DC Gavin: What basement?
Kerry: At the Hotel Madison.
DC Gavin: We didn't search any basement at the hotel
when we were searching for you or Kate.
Kerry: Well, that's where Kate is. You have your
answer. Now goodbye.

Kerry: You look a little overdressed for going on a
train. (Laughs) Why'd you leave him?
Gloria: He was having an affair. I found out a week
ago. I would've left him before the wedding but leaving him
standing at the alter is more humiliating I think. It's
revenge - he humiliated me, I'm humiliating him.
Kerry: Nice. Anyway, where are you heading?
Gloria: As far away from here as possible. You?
Kerry: The same. You wouldn't mind if I joined you,
would you?
Gloria: Not at all. I could use the company. By the
way, I'm Gloria. And you?
Kerry: I'm Susan.
